プロダクトデザイナーManamyさんに「一緒に展覧会をしない？」とお誘いいただいたのは、昨年１２月、江ノ島で開かれたManamyさんの展示会でのことでした。
思いがけないお話に「やります！」と即答し、それからどんな作品づくりをしようか色々と考えました。まったく違うジャンルの２つの作品を違和感なく展示するにはどうしたらいいだろう。帯と合う絵を古臭くなく描くにはどうしたらいいかな。
そこで考えたのが、植物を同じ形の細長い紙に描くことでした。Manamyさんの「帯たたみ」は、同じ形のものがずらりと並ぶからです。私は、出品する作品のうち半分をそのようにして、残りの半分は風景画をお気に入りの額装にすることに決めて絵を描き始めました。
昨日、DM用の写真を撮影するためにManamyさんの辻堂のアトリエを訪ねました。撮影用の「帯たたみ」を選んでいたはずなのに、いつの間にか私の墨絵に合う帯を選んでいました。それはまるで着物のコーディネートのような感覚で、私たちは夢中になってしまいました。これは面白い。墨絵の先輩たちには叱られそうだけど、私たちのコラボレーションの形が見えてきました。

Exhibition Obi-tatami & Sumie / space K 201 Edy Daikanyama, Sarugaku-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
It was last December when Manamy proposed me to hold an exhibition together. ‘I’ll do!” I answered immediately to the unexpected and great propsal. Then I started to think how to exhibite two works of completely different genres without discomfort. Her works are made of old obi/the band. How could we display our works without discomfort, how could I paint to fit with the material of obi..Then an idea came out: I would paint some flowers in elongated paper of the same shape like her works. Manamy’s obi-tatamis have the same shape with different designs. I decided that I would paint like that half of my works and the other half would be landscapes with normal frames. Yesterday. I visited Manamy’s atlier in Tsujido in order to take some pictures for the DM. When Manamy put my sumi-e on an obi which is one of her collections, they were amazingly matched. We were obsessed about choosing obi, it was like a sense of kimono coodination. It was so fun. I surely think the new form of sumi-e can be seen at the exhibition.
