墨絵&日本画 梨水

書にはたくさんのルールがあります。まず、字の形が決まっています。楷書、行書、草書、隷書、仮名など、１つの文字にいくつものくずし方や形があるので、覚えるだけでも大変です。その上、書く文章と字の時代が合っていないといけないというルールもあります。また、漢詩や和歌など文学を知らなければ題材を選ぶことすらできません。つまり、とても窮屈なのです。墨絵の自由度とは比べものになりません。しかし、その窮屈なルールをクリアしながら紙の上に何かを表現する面白さが書にはあるのです。クセになる面白さです。

今日書いたのは、「海雀」という北原白秋の詩です。毎月集まっている勉強会の次の課題です。この短い詩の中には「海雀」と言う言葉が６回も出てきます。「波」も２回。「銀の点点」も２回出てきます。こんな風に同じ字が何度も出て来るものは大変難しいのです。同じ字を全部違えて書かなくては、ただのお習字になってしまいます。これができるまでに30枚以上は書きましたが、なんとか面白く書けたかな。

実は、私は海雀がどんな鳥なのか知らなかっのです。何となく千鳥のような小さな鳥をイメージしていましたので、最初は横に細長い紙に海雀を小さく書いていました。ところが、ネットで画像を見てみたら、海雀は可笑しな顔をした鴎のような鳥だったのです。それで、紙の形も変え、字も大きくして書きました。それで、こんな風に出来上がったのです。波の間に間に姿が見え隠れする海雀の感じが伝わりましたでしょうか。

Calligraphy has many rules. Each kanji has some shapes such as Kaisho, Gyousho, Sousho, Kana, they are quite different and it’s not easy to remember all of them. Moreover, the knowledge of Japanese literature and Chinese poetry is needed to choose them for a subject. So calligraphy is constrained by cultural elements that cannot be compared with Sumi-e which has a lot of flexibility. All the more reason, it is interesting to express something on the paper. It is really exciting.

What I drew today is a poetry of Hakushu Kitahara ‘Umi-suzume (murrelets)’. This is a subject of next month’s study meeting. In this short poetry, there are six 海雀/murrelets, two 波/waves and 銀の点点/silver dots. It is very difficult to draw such type of poetry because we have to draw the same kanji with different shapes. Or it cannot be an art work but just a Shuji/practice. I dew more than 30 patterns before this one. I wonder if I could draw an interesting one.

In fact, I didn’t know what kind of bird murrelet is. When I first read this poetry, I imagined it was a small bird like a plover, so I drew the Kanji of 海雀 much smaller on the horizontally long paper. But one day I saw them on the internet, they were much bigger, as big as seagulls and had a funny face. Then I changed the shape of paper and I drew them bigger. I hope that you see them coming and going among the waves.

フェイスブックの「墨絵 Sumi-e」というグループに参加しました。ここには２,７００人以上のメンバーがいて、墨絵を勉強している世界中の人と交流することができます。私にはちょっとした意図があって、ただ自分の作品を見てもらうだけでなく、世界の人たちがどんな絵を好むのかをここで調査しようと思ったのです。もちろん、自分の作品を２,７００人の人たちに一度に見てもらえるのは、それだけでも楽しいことです。

フェイスブックに２枚の絵を投稿しました。１つは「春霞」という川辺の風景、もう１つは「夜明け」という海の絵です。どちらも私の自信作でお気に入りでしたが、圧倒的に人気があったのは「春霞」でした。私は世界中からコメントをもらいました。その中に、”I have been there..（ここに行ったことがあります）” というのがありました。どうやら、この風景は誰もがいつか見たことのある、懐かしい心象風景のようなのです。そういえば、カナダ人の友人もフランス人の友人も、この絵を見て「自分の国にもこういう場所がある」と言ったのを思い出しました。

そうか、私はそういう絵を描けばいいんだ。見る人の心が温かくなるような、懐かしくて涙が出そうになるような絵を描けばいいんだ。そこにオーラを吹き込む。「オーラのある墨絵」です。

I attended a group of Facebook named ‘Sumi-e’. There are more than 2,700 members and we can interact with people who study ink painting. In fact, my intention was not only showing my works to people but also researching people’s favor. Of course, it is great itself to show my drawings to over 2,700 people at a time.  

I posted two drawings; a landscape of the riverside named ‘Spring haze’ and ‘Break of day’ that is the sea of early-morning. Both of them are my favorite but the one that had gotten overwhelming support from people was ‘Spring haze’. I got a lot of comments from all over the world. One of them was like this: “I have been there..” The river is near my house actually, but this landscape seems to be an universal mental scenery. Come to think of it, my Canadian friend and my French friend said the same thing.

I understand that I should draw something like this: the common landscapes that people have a sense of nostalgia. And I will put an aura on them. That is the Sumi-e giving out an aura.

取り憑かれたように描いた「枯れゆくひまわり」シリーズは、京都の従兄のところに行った幻の№１を除いて最終的に８枚になりました。ずっとモデルをしてくれたヒマワリは、最後は可哀想なくらい干からびてしまいましたが、その姿がまたなんとも美しくてなかなか捨てることができません。それをついに昨日、意を決して下がってもらうことにしました。花瓶の中から手に取ると、花はまだ描いて欲しそうにしていましたが、「ありがとう。あなたたちのお陰でいい絵がたくさん描けたよ」と声を掛けて捨てました。

出来上がった絵を並べてみました。うん、なかなか面白い。いつか、この中から３、４枚を選んで展示しよう。花の絵で人を感動させるのは難しいと、墨絵作家だった伯母がよく言っていました。でも、こんな風にストーリーを持たせることで見る人に感動を与えることはできるような気がします。それに、何より自分が楽しい。それが一番だと思います。

As for the ‘Dying sunflowers’ series which had been possessed me for a while,  I drew a total eight pieces except No. 1 of the illusion that my cousin bought before I had taken its picture. The sunflowers which had modeled all the time dried up finally, but their figure was still beautiful and I could not readily throw them away. But yesterday, I finally decided to leave them. When I picked them up from a vase, they seemed to ask me to draw them more, but I threw them away to the trash box and said, “It’s thank to you, I could draw many good pictures.”

I apposed them. Yes, quite interesting!  “Someday, I am going to exhibit with a choice of three or four pieces of them.” My late aunt who was also a sumi-e artist used to say that it was difficult to impress people in the flower pieces, but I feel like being able to move people with a story in this way. More than anything, I enjoyed myself. I think that it is the best.

月曜日、雨の中を友人と鎌倉に行きました。明月院のアジサイが目当てでした。今年は花の時期が全体的に早かったのでギリギリのタイミングでしたが、１ヶ月も前から決めていた鎌倉遠足だったのです。北鎌倉駅を降りると、駅からすぐの円覚寺をまず訪ね、時折強く降る雨を物ともせず明月院に向かいました。鎌倉石が美しい参道に見事に咲いていたはずのアジサイは、残念ながら既に花が切られていましたが、盛りの頃はさぞ美しかっただろうと想像できました。しかし、境内にはわずかに花が残っている箇所があり、聞けば今日を最後に全部の花を剪定するとのこと。寺を訪れる人のために残された、今年最後のアジサイを見ることができたわけです。

On Monday, I went to Kamakura with my friend in the rain. It was hydrangeas of Meigetsuin temple that we wanted to see. Since flowers bloomed overall faster this year, it was the last minute of flowering, but we had decided to go there a month ago and had been looking forward to it. When we got off the Kita-Kamakura Station, we visited the immediate temple Engakuji first, then we went to Meigetsuin although it was raining hard occasionally. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see any flowers on the beautiful stairs of approach, but it must have been so beautiful when they were blooming. However,  inside the grounds of temple, there was a part that was left slightly flowers. They said that they would cut off all of the flowers the next day. They left them for people who visited the temple, we could see the last flowers of hydrangea in this year.

明月院を出て鶴岡八幡宮に向かって歩いていると、道路の向こう側に面白い店を見つけました。「創業文政元年 友野風呂」の看板を掲げた風情のある建物です。店先には、ヒノキの桶や椅子、柄杓などが置かれ、店内にはなんと、大小さまざまのキューピーがワゴンの上にぎっしり並んでいるのです。風呂桶とキューピー。なんというキッチュな光景！ こういうの、大好きなんです。私たちは、引き寄せられるように道路を渡り、店の前に立ちました。出て来たのはこの店の８代目でヒノキ職人の御年７０歳の店主でした。これが、ヒノキのについて語り出したら止まらない。友人も私もそういう「職人さん」が大好きなので、おじさんの薀蓄を散々聞いた後、ヒノキのオイルと卵型のお風呂グッズを買いました。キューピーについてもおじさんは色々言っていましたが、結局のところおじさんの好みなのだと思います。

 After Meigetsuin, while we were walking toward Tsuruoka-hachimangu shrine, we found an interesting shop on the other side of the street. It was a long-standing traditional house that has set a sign of ‘established the first year of Bunsei (in 1803), Tomono’s bath shop’. In the storefront, there were some items made of cypress such as basins, chairs, ladles etc. Strangely, in the store, a lot of Kewpie dalls were on display on the wagon. Bath items of sypress and Kewpies…How kitsch ! I love this. We were irresistibly drawn toward the shop. The orner was 70-year-old cypress craftsman in the eighth generation of this shop. Once he started to talk about the cypress, he couldn’t stop. Since both of us like ‘the craftsmen’, we listened to his long speach and bought the cypress oil and the egg shaped bath goods of cypress. The man also talked something about Kewpies, but I think he likes them after all.

どこに行ってもすぐに休憩したくなる私たちです。目の前に「花仙」という甘味処を見つけると、私たちは中に吸い込まれて行きました。メニューを開くと、「白玉ぜんざい」の文字が目に飛び込んできました。白玉は私の好物です。雨のせいか広い店内には私たちしかいませんが、各テーブルには小さな花生けに季節の野の花が生けられています。奥には茶室もあって、床の間にも入口の辺りにもアジサイが生けられていました。「行き届いているなぁ」と感心しているところに白玉ぜんざいが運ばれてきました。それを見た私たちは思わず歓声を上げました。お盆の上には、美味しそうな白玉ぜんざいと一緒に、友人にはネジバナのようなピンクの花、私にはキキョウが一輪添えられていたのです。なんという心遣い。ぜんざいは期待通り、甘さ控えめの上品な味わいでした。日本はやっぱり美しく、そして面白い国です。

Wherever we go, we want to break soon. We found a Japanese tearoom named ‘Kasen’ and got sucked into it. When I opened the menu, the character of ‘Shiratama-zenzai (small balls made of rice powder on the sweet boiled red-beans)’  jumped into my eyes. Shiratama is my favorite. Because of the bad weather, there were no clients but us, but on the each table in the large tearoom, there was a small base with a beautiful wild flower. There was also a tatami-room in the back, the arrangement of hydrangeas placed there. The Shiratama-zenzai had been brought. What impressed us was a sprig of Japanese bellflower placed on the plate. It was a beautiful demonstration of their thoutfullness. We enjoyed the Japanese sweets of course. Japan is still beautiful, and an interesting country.

アートの神様が降りてきた私は、あれから１週間、変化してゆくヒマワリを描き続けました。ヒマワリは描けば描くほど面白くて、私は夢中になってしまいました。実は、はじめは２種類のヒマワリが花瓶に入っていたのですが、１種類は早々と枯れてしまい、ゴッホのヒマワリだけが残っていました。ところが、先に枯れたヒマワリは段々と頭を垂れてくるのに、ゴッホはいつまでもシャンとしたまま花だけが萎れていくのです。それはそれで面白いのですが、やはり下を向いている方が絵になります。それで、多少脚色を加えて描いていきました。これは６日目です。

土曜日の夕方、女優の友人の家に遊びに行きました。彼女は安房直子の朗読劇をライフワークにしていて、原宿の小さな劇場で定期的に公演をしています。枯れゆくヒマワリの話をすると、彼女は急に目を輝かせて言いました。「なんという偶然なの！ ７月の舞台では『ひまわり』っていう短い話を読むつもりなのよ。ねえ、あなたのヒマワリを舞台に並べたらどうかしら」。嬉しいオファーですが、急過ぎて準備が間に合いません。でも逆に、私が次に展覧会を開く時に、ヒマワリの絵の前で彼女に朗読してもらうことはできます。これはステキなコラボレーションになるに違いありません。来年、生徒さんたちと社中展を開く時に実現できるよう計画しよう。高尚でいいね。なんだか楽しさがこみ上げてきました。

As God of Art decended on me, I have been painting the changing sunflowers for a week. The more I painted it, the more it became exciting, I got crazy about that. In fact, I had two kinds of sunflowers in a vase, one died down early and just the one of Gogh left there. The one died was bending their heads slowly whereas the other one stood up straight for all time. Both are interesting but the one with bending head is more artistic. So I draw the Gogh one with taking artistic license. This is the one on the sixth day.

On Saturday evening, I went to see my friend who is an actress. She puts on the reading performance every two months in the small play house in Harajuku. I told her about ‘the dying sunflowers’ series, she said “What a coincidence! I am going to read a short story named ‘Himawari (sunflowers)’ next week. Why don’t you display your works on my stage?” It was a pleasant offer but too soon. However, I can ask her to read it in front of my sunflowers in my next exhibition which will be held next year, the group exhibition with my student. I am sure that will be a nice collaboration! I felt a surge of pleasure.

夏になると花屋さんの店先に色々な種類のヒマワリが並びます。近所のお気に入りのお花屋さんで見つけたのは「ゴッホのヒマワリ」。確かに、これはあの有名な絵に描かれた種類のヒマワリです。「ゴーギャンのヒマワリ」というのもあって、それは以前描いたことがありますが、ゴッホの方が日本人には馴染みがあります。ちょうど翌日がお稽古日だったので、今月のモチーフをヒマワリに決めて買って帰りました。お稽古では、生徒さんたちがそれぞれ素敵なヒマワリを描きました。それを見て私も描きたくなり、翌日早速墨を磨って描きました。なかなか面白く描けました。

昨日、京都に住む従兄が奥さんと一緒に遊びにきました。私が夕食の支度をしている間、ふたりは私の作品のストックを、あれこれ言いながら真剣に眺めています。箱の中には、展覧会に出せるレベルの絵が10点以上入っていました。暫くすると、従兄が３枚の絵を持ってきて言いました。「これ、買うから値段教えて」。私はびっくりしました。だって、そんなこと全然期待していなかったから。そのうちの１枚が、一昨日描いたばかりのヒマワリでした。私は喜んで買っていただきました。

ふたりが帰った後、私はヒマワリの絵の写真を撮っていなかったことを思い出しました。すると無性に描きたくなり、夜だと言うのに墨を磨ってヒマワリを描き始めました。それが、この絵です。１枚描くともっと描きたくなりましたが、夜中だったので諦めました。「また明日描こう」。そして、今日もまたヒマワリの絵を描きました。花は日に日に朽ちていきます。その様子を毎日描くのも面白いと思いました。どうやら、絵の神様が降りてきたようです。

In summer, we can see different kinds of sunflower in the frolist shops. Few days ago, I found the beautiful one named ‘sunflowers of Gogh’, which is the one that the famous Van Gogh painted many times. I have painted ‘sunflowers of Gauguin’ but this one is more familier with us Japanese. I had an ink painting lesson the next day, so I bought some as a motif. When I saw my students creating beautiful drawings, I became itchy to paint it. So I painted it the next day. I succeeded to make a nice one. 

Yesterday, my cousin living in Kyoto and his wife came to my house. While I was preparing for dinner, they were watching my stock drawings seriously, I kept more than ten pieces in a box for the next exhibition. Suddenly, they picked three of them and said “we will buy them”. I was surprised because I didn’t expected that at all. One of them was the one of sunflowers. Of course, I sold them with pleasure.

After they left my place, I noticed that I did not take any pictures of it. Then I suddenly wanted to paint it again and sat at the table and rubbed the ink stick on its stone. This is the one that I drew at the time. Once I painted, I wanted to do more, but it was already midnight so I gave up. “I am going to paint tomorrow.” I painted sunflowers again today. I created a nice one. Flowers are dying and changing their shapes day by day . I think it is interesting for a motif. It appears that Got of Art descended on me.

GWには何処にも行く予定がないので、絵を描くことにしました。暖房も冷房も要らず湿度が低い春は、墨絵を描くのに最適な季節です。つい最近、猫のいる窓辺を描いた絵が売れたのですが、それがとても評判が良くて、「またあんなのを描いて」というリクエストをいただきました。

私の周りには猫を飼っている人が多いのです。猫は体が柔らかくて色々なポーズを取ります。伸びたり、丸まったり、覗きこんだり…実に表情が豊かです。動物が風景の中にいると、それだけで絵が生き生きしますので、私は当面猫のいる風景を描くことに決めました。

昨日から手掛けていたのは、猫のいるフランスの町の絵です。毛づくろいをしている子と、建物の入り口の壁に擦り寄っている子の２匹がいます。同じ風景を以前にも猫なしで描いたことがありますが、動物の姿は目をさらいます。こちらの方がずっと良い絵になりました。

続いて描いたのは海辺のカフェのテラスにいる猫。本当はうちの近所のパン屋さんなのですが、建物と猫を描いたら海が見えてきたので、急遽海辺のカフェに変身したというわけです。絵ですから、こんな風に自由自在に景色を創ることだってできるのです。こちらは、少し気に入らないところがあるのでもう一度描くことにします。

朝起きて、一段落したら墨を磨る。アーティストだからね。歩みを止めないようにしようと思います。

サントリー美術館で開催されている「若冲と蕪村」を観に行きました。今年は二人の生誕３００年に当たるということで、「同い年の天才絵師」というキャッチフレーズで話題になっています。ポスターには有名な象と鯨の絵。広告は完璧です。

若冲は、明治以降忘れられた存在だったのを、アメリカ人収集家ジョー・プライスのコレクションによって再評価されたのだといいます。確かに、一番有名な象と鯨の絵は素晴らしかった。小さな四角をベースに描く「桝目描き」という技法は、ポップで斬新でそれは素敵です。鳥は、鶏も小鳥も描きなれている感じで表現が豊かです。

しかし、墨絵は酷い。特に植物は苦手のようです。私たちは墨絵を描きますので、墨色や筆遣いについては見ればわかります。墨色は単調、筆の使い方もなってない。良い絵が全然ないのです。展覧会では墨絵の方が日本画より多かったように思いますが、ここに紹介するためにインターネットで墨絵の作品を検索しましたが、「若冲」で検索しても出て来るのは殆どが日本画で、私たちが展覧会で見たような墨絵は出てきません。敢えて載せる程のものがないからだと思います。

展覧会では、四双の屏風なのに明らかにヤル気がなくて描いたようなものもありました。でも、それを大勢の人が感心して見ています。有名だから、評価が高い絵師の作品だからという理由で良いものとして見ているようですが、多分若冲本人がこの展覧会を見たら恥ずかしくて隠したくなる作品はたくさんあったはずです。

人の評価というのはいい加減なものだと、友人と話しました。審美眼のある人は少ない。若冲は日本画の絵師としては素晴らしいかもしれませんが、だからといってすべての作品が素晴らしいわけではないのです。そういうわけで、この展覧会は全体として良いものではない、というのが私たちの感想でした。

個展の一週間後に墨絵のお稽古がありました。そのクラスには２人の生徒さんがいて、それぞれ個性的な絵を描きます。人と一緒に描くのは、お互いに刺激になってとても良いことです。私が先生のところに通っていた時は、妹と従姉と私の３人でお稽古をしていました。従姉は長年中国旅行のガイドをしていた人で絵も大陸的、妹は上手くないけど面白い絵を描きます。私はといえば、どうしても優等生的な絵になってしまいそれがコンプレックスでしたが、２人と一緒に描くうちに段々と大胆さが出てきました。

思えば、私は習い始めて２年目に会の展覧会に出したのでした。初めての出品作はシュロの絵でしたが、今見てもなかなか良い絵です。展覧会は隔年でしたが、不思議なことに展覧会をやる度に腕が上がっていきました。これは誰にも起こる現象で、色々な人に見ていただいて批評を聞くことで何かが変わるのです。私の生徒さんはもう何年も通っている人たちで、十分に展覧会に出せる実力を持っています。

「展覧会をやろうか」と言ったら、2人は二つ返事で「やりたい！」と言いました。目標ができると張り合いが出ると、目を輝かせました。それで、来年の秋に初めての社中展を開くことに決まりました。「梨水会展」ではつまらないから、会の名前を決めよう。新しい目標ができて、私も嬉しい。

昨日さっそく絵を描きました。思った通りの絵が出来上がりました。当面のテーマは「猫のいる風景」にすること決めました。社中展か、ああ楽しみだな。

初のコラボ展が無事終了しました。分かり難い場所にもかかわらず、たくさんの方にご来場いただきありがとうございました。これまでずっとグループ展には出品してきましたが、個展は初めてでしたので自由で面白かった。

展覧会を開くと普段なかなか会えない人にお会いできるのも良いところです。中学校の担任の先生、若い頃の同僚、遠くに住んでいる友だち、ずっと会いたいと思っていたのに会えなかった人など。今回は本当にたくさんの「会いたい人」にお会いすることができました。

私は、何かをコーディネートするのが大好きです。それで、この展覧会のお話をいただいた時にまず考えたのは、質の違うものをどうやって１つに見せるかということでした。会場ではManamyさんの帯たたみと私の墨絵を交互に飾ったのですが、まるで「ルビンの壺」のようだと思いました。つまり、私の絵に注目している時は帯たたみが背景になり、帯たたみに注目していると絵が背景になる、そして両方があって１つの景色になっている、ということです。私の目論見は成功していると思いました。

こういうコラボも面白いのですが、次は自分だけの世界を作りたいという気持ちも湧いてきました。今回は気付くと風景画６点のうち海の絵を３点、川辺の絵を１点と、水の絵ばかり持ってきましたが、本当はヨーロッパの風景を描くのも大好きなのです。海外でも活躍しているイラストレーターの友人にフランスの風景を褒めていただき、日本で個展をする時はヨーロッパの絵をもっと出そうと思いました。逆に、外国で展覧会をする時は日本的な絵を多く出そうと。

なにはともあれ、個展は楽しい。発見もあり、反省もあり、それを次へのステップしようという意欲が湧きます。今日から次の個展のためにまた絵を描きます。
